When using diesel generators, the emergency backup power system is incomplete if the diesel generator is not equipped with an ATS. The ATS automatic transfer switch monitors the power source and automatically performs the transfer from the main power source to the backup diesel generator and vice versa. This is an essential operation that ensures that your facility receives continuous power and no damage occurs during the transfer of the load from one power source to another.
How does ATS work?
Without a properly functioning ATS, the transfer of your loads from one power source to another can cause many difficulties. If both power sources are connected at the same time, it may overload circuits and machines. The process of connecting the two power sources may also create a backfeed between the two, which may cause damaging surges through the grid power lines and the backup diesel generator. The ATS manages the flow of power to protect the electrical system and maintain continuous power, whether the power comes from the grid lines or the backup diesel generator.
The ATS continuously monitors the power source and senses when the grid power is intermittent, insufficient, or completely offline. When it detects an insufficiency, it automatically turns on the backup power source and then transfers the electrical load of your facility when the backup diesel generator is ready. After the switch, the ATS continues to monitor the grid line for power, and when it detects that grid power is available and stable again, it transfers your electrical load to the primary power source again and shuts down the backup diesel generator. All of this happens without any human intervention, meaning everyone can continue normal business operations without interruption.
Manual transfer switches are also available. These do not monitor the power supply and switch automatically, but require manual operation. It should be noted that for certain industries where life safety is critical, ATS is generally required as part of the backup diesel generator system.
